Jeff asks…
Can you get hired as a pharmacy tech without prior work experience?
I’ve never worked at all. I have been studying for the exam through a book and I’m set to take the PTCB exam within the next 3 months. I’m also a pre-pharmacy college student.

I would suggest that you first check with your State’s Board of Pharmacy to find out what are the requirements to work in a pharmacy. Your state may require you to be certified or want you to complete an approved course of study before you can be hired. Some states only require you to register with the Board or in others the pharmacist in charge provides on-the-job training. The fact that you’re pre-pharmacy could help you land a job without experience. You might want to check if any local hospitals accept volunteers in the pharmacy. Some employers may consider this as work experience and it may help you get into pharmacy school. Good luck with your certification exam!

Pharmacy technician jobs in New York? Please help!?
I’m in my senior year of high school with plans to take a pharmacy tech course and hopefully get a certificate. I’ll also be going to college in New York (Manhattan). What are my chances of getting a job and what would the pay be? Please help thanks!
Lorian (CPhT) answers:
New York is one of seven or so states that doesn’t regulate pharmacy technicians at all. So certification is not required to work in a New York pharmacy, however it should work to your advantage when job hunting. I looked up salary information on payscale.com and cbsalary’s site and it seems that starting pay for pharmacy techs without experience is typically around $8-10 hour. Hope this helps – Good luck!
